As Polo season heats up, it’s time to take sartorial inspiration from the best dressed guests at last year’s events

I enjoy dressing for the polo as it doesn’t have the restrictions of a wedding or the races. In essence, it’s all about looking neat, tidy and stylish. These charity shop trousers are the perfect alternative to a girly dress; their snug fit and lightweight material means they are great for occasions when you don’t know what the weather is going to do. When wearing trousers though, keep the rest of your outfit feminine as I’ve done with this silk Alice Temperley blouse. My must have item for the polo is a good pair of sunglasses – like these Zero Black Taylor Morris editions and either a wedge or thick heeled shoe so you’re able to divot in style.

Sienna Miller is one of my biggest style crushes – and she proves why with this Dolce & Gabbana ensemble. The key ingredients to her winning look are embracing colour, pattern and an ultra feminine cut dress. Note too how Sienna sticks to a thick heel to avoid falling through the precious polo turf and cleverly opts for a medium sized handbag so the outfit doesn’t become too dressy. Avoid clutch bags at the polo; they’re impractical and can look overly formal.
Sticking with one colour pallet for the polo is a good way to ensure you appear immaculate and stylish. But if you’re going to wear it head to toe – as Gemma Arterton has done here with this retro trouser combination – stick with a more subdued colour like navy. I love the way Gemma has made a headpiece out of the fabric off-cuts; a good use of wasted material and a fun way to spice up an outfit. Top tip: if you’re going for a trouser ensemble for the polo stick to either a tailored trouser or a well-fitting flare.
When choosing brightly coloured trousers, keep the shape and style suitably simple – like these fitted flares from Zara.
